I recently met with an important collector from California. I handed this to him and asked him his opinion of how this was used. I jokingly asked "hockey puck?" and to my surprise he answered with a serious tone, "yes, that's exactly it". He pointed immediately to the obv...ious polishing on the flat sides and informed me that, yes, there is an accepted theory that these were indeed game pieces. There's some good research to be found on these. If you google "Discoidal" you will find some fascinating reading. The research describes a game called "chungke" where the disc was rolled over a smooth patch of ground. The rolling team defends the disc from an opposing team that tries to hit the disc with small spears while in motion. Sounds a little loose to me. I can imagine the rules changing on a whim. There were probably all kinds of fights, and I can imagine some overly self assured guy, probably wearing a striped tunic, taking heat for questionable calls.
