CDV by A. D. Lytle, Baton Rouge, of the USS Avenger, a side-wheel steam ram constructed by the Army at New Albany, Indiana. Along with her sister ship Vindicator, however, she was turned over to the Navy in 1864. Avenger was commissioned at Cairo in February 1864 and by March was part of the Red River Campaign. She participated in the successful Ouachita River expedition in April, but embarked General Nathaniel Banks on his voyage to New Orleans at the unsuccessful conclusion of the Re...d River Campaign. Avenger remained on river patrol for the remainder of the war and was decommissioned at Mound City in July 1865. She operated out of New Orleans as the merchantman Balize until 1871. In this CDV view, several sailors can be seen posing on the bow, while a small landing party occupy a flag-decorated boat on the near shore. Very good condition with even toning and some minor soiling along the edges of the mount. On the reverse is the imprint of photographer Lytle. Measures about 4” x 2 1/2”.
