CDV by A. D. Lytle, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, of the Union Navy’s ironclad ram Lafayette. Originally built as a side-wheel steamer in 1848 as Aleck Scott, she was renamed Lafayette in September 1862. She was converted to an ironclad ram and joined the western flotilla by executive order in October. Lafayette’s new configuration was designed by Commodore William D. Porter. Like the Porter-designed Choctaw, Lafayette was incredibly imposing, but was overweight and far too slow for effe...ctive use as a ram. After being commissioned at Cairo in February 1863, Lafayette took part in Admiral David Dixon Porter’s run past Vicksburg’s daunting batteries in April 1863 and joined in the bombardment of Grand Gulf later that month. She also sailed in a preliminary expedition up the Red River in May 1864, and the June 1865 Red River expedition that led to the capture of Rebel ironclad Missouri. After the war, Lafayette was decommissioned and was laid up at New Orleans until sold there in March 1866. The CDV has some damage to albumen along its right edge, including loss near the lower-right corner, with about 1/8” of that corner partially separated from mount. Some soiling and foxing in margins. A. D. Lytle’s imprint appears on the verso. Measures about 4” x 2 1/2”.
