It is a route map depicting the road from Barnsley to Skipton via Halifax, with place names and topographical detail depicted along the way. Originally published as one of the plates in 'Britannia Depicta or Ogilby Improv'd'.
The lower part of the engraving is a lengthy write up about Halifax commencing thus: 'Halifax qui Halig-fax, ie Holy Hair. For there is a tradition that the name of ye town was fo...rmerly Horton and that a certain Clergyman in vain attempting ye chastity of a maiden inhabitant, in revenge barbarously cut off her head, afterwards hung on a tree. After the head was consumed by time and accidents, the tree was reputed Holy by the vulgar and so frequently visited by pilgrims.....'
Printed on laid paper and in excellent condition. Well presented with a cream coloured card mount within a traditional style black and gilt frame. Both mount and frame are in very good condition. A label verso probably from a antiquarian print seller.
Glazed and ready to hang. Please excuse any reflection in the photographs which have been taken through the glass.
Measures 27.5 x 21.5cm including the frame, the visible map measures 18 x 12.5cm.
