Early 19th century oval silk work - c.1830 or slightly earlier. This piece is just stunning with fine quality stitch and paint work throughout. The scene, possibly allegorical, is a charming one of a winged angel and young boy amidst a rural setting framed by mountains, trees and shrubs. The pair are walking in a stream originating from a mountainous region behind them. The angel is holding the boy's hand in her left one whilst she points to a radiant sun shining in the distance... with her other. The backing silk has a few splits in the upper area left side area plus some minor damage around the edges, areas of which have come away from its backing board. The silk work is tacked onto a backing board so I'm not able to see its reverse, but the colours of the thread and paint appear to be in good condition though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The silk work is tacked onto its original backing board which is split across the bottom. The last photo shows how the split has been taped at some point of time to keep it secure but there is movement between the two parts of the board. As such I would recommend that the silk work remains flat and handling be kept to a minimum until it is behind glass and framed.Measures 12" x 15 1/4" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
