Early 19th century circular silk work - c.1820. This piece is just stunning with fine quality stitching and paint work throughout. The scene, which I think may be of a biblical event, is of a stern looking bearded man brandishing a stick at a young man standing by his side. A young woman, who I would think is the older man's daughter is kneeling beside him with an imploring look on her upturned face. There is a mountainous backdrop behind the trio with an angel playing a lyre sit...ting on a rock behind the girl. The backing silk around the stitch work has overall discolouration consistent with its age, a bit grubby in places with staining in the lower right quadrant and some damage around the edges. There are also a few small splits in the painted sky. The finely painted paper work of the hands and faces is in good condition with no tears and the colours of the paint still bright. The colours of the silks are good, albeit not as vibrant as when this piece was originally made. There are also a few loose threads down the left edge of the circle and the odd loose thread elsewhere. The last photo is of the reverse of the silk work and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched.
