EARLY/MID 19TH CENTURY ADAM & EVE, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY MARY METCALFE - 1839

Early/mid 19th century sampler by Mary Metcalfe - 1839. Worked in wool on soft gauze this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with the following short verse which has a flower basket and two floral motifs to the right side

The gauze beneath the verse is stitched from left to right with a floral u...rn which has a bird perched on its contents and a small carnation urn above. This is followed by a larger floral urn, two birds standing to the left and right of a floral motif and finishing with two small birds. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a delightful interpretation of the Garden of Eden which has Adam and Eve centre stage with Eve passing the apple to Adam. The Tree of Knowledge stands at Eve's side with the serpent slithering across the grass nearby. There is a hill behind Adam and Eve whilst the ground in front of them is stitched with flowers, a lion and a closed tail peacock. The garden has a tree plus bird on either side with the addition of a flower basket above the tree on the right, whilst Mary's name and the date of 1839 are stitched beneath with a tree plus bird to the left and right. The whole piece is then surrounded by a floral border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, paler around the edges and darker to the field from where the sampler has been over a stretcher. There is also what appears to be some staining, possibly water damage, to the lower section of the gauze outside the outline where the stretcher would have been. The colours of the wool are good with the odd stitch missing here and there in the outer floral border. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Mary first stitched it. The photographs also show visible tack marks around the edges of the gauze.Measures 17 1/2" across x 18"
