Be sure to have a look at our other items!This is an excellent find of an unusual, beautifully-carved, mechanical cuckoo clock that was created about 50 years ago in the Black Forest of Germany. The clock is deeply hand carved, detailed, and is one of the more unique clocks you'll fin...d in the traditional line. The case is designed to look very much like an intricately carved grape vine and features five, deeply carved wooden grape leaves on the front, a hand carved wooden bird near the right of the lower dial, and a large rustic bird perched in the branches atop the clock looking as though he's ready to take flight. All of the trim and carvings have the original, gorgeous, blonde walnut finish and the lower bird perched on the right is a darker walnut shade; very nice! It is a most impressive clock and the ideal size too measuring about 9" high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 5 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 6" at its widest point. The clock looks to be carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. The dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time. The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. It removes to allow access to the metal, mechanical weight driven movement. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The wooden bellow or whistle tubes are intact and the tops look and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime and then retreats back inside and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him; fascinating! The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, and cuckoos beautifully too! Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history though the movement does show signs of maintenance. Nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. I’ve looked the clock over fairly well and can’t find much in the way of wear or missing parts. Actually, the clock shows beautifully and is just gorgeous on display! This clock is a wonderful look back at the greatness of Black Forest workmanship and is certain to capture the imagination of anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase wonderful, mechanical German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
