Up for auction is a really early and very good Hen Canvasback made by the dean of Michigan decoy makers Ben Schmidt, ca. 1930s. The decoy is in original paint that does show some wear from use including rubs to the bill, head and tail as well as shot marks and dings to the head and body. It does appear that it has a bill repair to the left portion of the front of the bill. This decoy exhibits ...Ben Schmidt's classic well-carved bill and primaries. The glass eyes are original and do have some minor cracks in them. The original weighted keel is still in tact. The bottom carries a stamped "JF" brand twice with letters that straddle the keel. This is a very good example of this famous maker's earliest work. Measures 15-1/2” long; 7” wide; and 5-3/4” tall to not including the keel. Please ask questions or for more pictures.
