Up for auction is an early Hen Mallard made by the master of Michigan decoy making, Ben Schmidt, ca. 1930s. Note its longer body and elongated speculums and wing carving. The decoy is in nice original paint except for the bill which has a second coat, likely by Schmidt. It does show some rubs to the top of the head and the end of the tail. The decoy does have a couple of age checks in the body, one of which appears to have been fi...led in the making. Some of the filler has worked its way out. Its glass eyes are good and original. The feather stamping on this one is classic Schmidt and is beautifully done. Doesn’t get any better! This is just a great example of this Michigan icon’s early and best work. Measures 17” long; 7” wide; and 6-1/2” tall. Please ask questions or for more pictures. Shipping includes insurance and is higher outside of the USA.
