1978 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe Vintage Electric Guitar Tobacco Sunburst W/ Case
Item History & Price
The three-piece maple neck has a slender C profile carve at the nut with nicely rounded shoulders and more depth and heft in the higher registers, measuring .810" deep at the 1st fret and .999" at the 12th. The bound rosewood fretboard features pearl trapezoid inlay, and the guitar has been professionally refretted with wire that has vintage width and appreciably more height and crown than the aggressively flat Gibson factory fret dress in the ‘70s. The current fretwire shows moderate wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-2, with fainter wear on the crowns extending until fret 5. The guitar plays easily in every register with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The headstock retains the original Gibson "flower" tuning machines with metal tulip buttons and extremely clean nickel plating.
On the body, all of the electronics work as they should, with a wiring harness that retains all of the original CTS pots with untouched solder joints, dating to the 30th week of 1978. Both mini humbuckers have clean patent number baseplates, with 1978 date stamps from September and October. The stock chrome hardware is nigh flawless, and the original plastic parts are near mint. The Tobacco Sunburst nitro lacquer gloss finish is 100% original with no touchup or overspray, and the carved three-piece top has a broad central third with prominent flame figuring. The top is stunningly clean, with just one tiny nick near the lower bout binding edge roughly central to the maple cap. Wear is otherwise limited to a few light finish scratches central to the back, yet shy of buckle rash, and a few additional nicks and marks on the back lower bout edge. The neck profile is also practically perfect with a hint of faint figuring in the maple.
A modern Gibson USA black tolex hardshell case is included.
