MID 19TH CENTURY MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY ELIZABETH KILVERT AGED 11 - C. 1840
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:55989 |
Jesus permit thy gracious name to standAs the first effort of an infants (h)andAnd while her fingers on this canvas moveEngage her tender heart to seek thy loveWith thy dear children let her share a partAnd write thy name thyself upon her heart
The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central flower basket with a floral motif, tulip plus bird and a tree on either side and a square pattern motif and fruit basket to the left and right of its topmost blooms. Elizabeth's name and age are stitched across the bottom edge of the linen with an example of zigzag border to the right then underlined with a meandering floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly grubby in places with some scattered stains and darker in the upper left quadrant where it looks as though the sampler has been folded up for many years. There is also a small area of damage by the flower basket above the tree on the left side of the verse plaque. The colours of the wool are good with some areas of stitch loss, mostly in the words. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it Elizabeth first stitched it.Measures 16 1/2" across x 17 1/2"
