Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Rachel Samuel aged 13 - 1820. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the linen are stitched with a central framework which has a triangulated long stitch edging and contains the following verse with Rachel's details to finish

There is a central flower on the top edge of the framework flanked by a floral motif, floral urn and fruit basket, whilst each side of the framework is stitched with a tall floral motif, bird and tree basket. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches. Each figure has a lion and floral urn at their side with two birds above each urn, then the whole piece is surrounded by a deep flower and strawberry border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, a bit grubby around the edges with some small areas of damage. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is some slight bleeding to areas of the green and black stitch work. The sampler is contained within a mid 19th century stained pine frame with gilt slip. Both are in good condition with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with their age. Measures 12 3/4" x 15 1/2" (sight size) and 15 3/4" x 18 1/2" including the frame.
