Seller: Alley-Antiques DESCRIPTION: Highly collectible child's cup mug. This is an early American Sterling Silver cup mug. This piece was made in the 1860s in sterling silver while many silversmiths were still using coin silver. What makes this child's cup very collectible is the apparent American Civil War provenance. On one side of the cup it is engraved "Henry Behemond Smyser from his Godfather Col. PV Hagner USA April 13, 1864". The middle of the cup has the original ...engraved initials "HBS". The other side is engraved "Eugene Palmer Smyser April 10, 1907" (a later addition to the cup). PV Hagner graduated West Point in 1836. During the Civil War from 1861-1863 Colonel Peter V. Hagner served as the Inspector of Contract Arms and Ordinance Stores. Then he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and served as Comander of the Watervliet Arsenal. In 1865 he became a Brigadier General for the remainder of the Civil War. This childs cup dates to the 1860s to 1864. It was made by John Wendt & Co. and sold through Ball, Black & Co. New York, New York. Marked on the bottom with a shield with 925/1000 that John Wendt used from 1855-1870. Ball, Black & Co. worked from 1851-1874. Both were known for their quality. John Wendt pieces are highly collectible today. Antique. Over 150 years old. Fair to good condition for age. A few small dents. There is 1 dent on the side below April 1864 date(pic #7). 1 tiny dent on side near back. 3 or 4 small dents on handle. Some teeny tiny pinpoint dings. Some black dot imperfections. Some stubborn tarnish inside cup. Upon close inspection you will notice some wear and scratches typical of age and use. Highly collectible Civil War era child's cup mug.This measures about 4 1/4" tall to top of handle. Weighs about 174 grams (weighed on Postal scale). US bidders only on this item.
