Be sure to have a look at our other items!This is a beautifully designed, absolutely gorgeous, carved wood, music and dancers chalet cuckoo clockthat was produced about 40 years ago in the Black Forest of what was then, Villingen "West Germany" by "Emil Schmeckenbecher, " one of the finest clock makers in t...his region of the world. This clock is simply beautiful and designed to look like a detailed wooden farm house like many that used to dot the landscape in the mountains of southern Germany. This clock is made from cured and aged Lindenwood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. It has a remarkable blended deep walnut finish with lots of hand painted colorful Edelweiss flowers as well as wooden trim including a carved lower platform, fancy roof trim under the eaves, and wooden scallops serving as a platform for a rotating dance floor. There are four colorful Black Forest dance couples mounted on the rotating platform, a colorful Black Forest lady standing on the right side of the lower platform, and an equally impressive Black Forest man holding an accordion and standing on the left side of the platform; looks like a serenade to me! The dial has a black background and features raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and a rare set of matching, fancy wooden hands to pointout the time. There is a wood door at the very back that is secured with a metal latch. It easilyremoves to allow access to the all metal, weight driven movement produced by "Regula" and bearing the Schmeckenbecher name. Aweight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulledoccasionally to wind the clock, cuckoo and music activities. Regula makes the best movements and Emil used this brand in all of his high end clocks. The bellow or cuckoo whistle tubesare intact and the tops look and sound good too! At the bottomof each hour, a colorful bird opens the small green wooden door above the dance floor and stands in the doorway. The bird gives offa single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding coiled chime inside thecase and then returns to the safeconfines of the clock, closing the door behind him. Then at the top of each hour, thebird appears again and correctly cuckoos/chimes the current number of hoursbefore going back inside the clock. When the bird is safely back inside, the dance floor begins to turn and the dancers spin about in a dance as the Swiss music box inside the case plays a heavenly version of Southern Roses, a very popular tune. The dancers stop when the tune isfinished and the dancers wait until the next hour to continue the dance; absolutely fascinating! I'velooked the clock over fairly well and only find modest signs of use; no damage, repairs, or missing parts and absolutely gorgeous on display! It works quite well here, keeps good time, cuckoos as it should, and the music is beautiful. This clock is most impressive and a great example of old style Black Forest carving. It is the ideal size too measuring about 12" at its highest (not countingthe weights or pendulum), about 6" or so at its deepest point, and about 10" across the top. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history. The movement, however, does show signs of maintenance but nonetheless, some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. We oftenrecommend to our clock customers to have their vintage or antique clocksserviced at least once every three years. Doing so will keep a classicclock like this one, healthy for years to come. The clock comes completeas shown with three sets of attached metal chains, a carved wooden chalet pendulum with another Edelweiss flower on it, and three rather heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. This clock is in a class all by itself. There is no doubt that it will capture the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office, or wherever it is that you care to showcase a wonderful, old country, rare German timepiece with a fabulous legacy.
