This fascinating work, has been handsomely rebacked, with ...the contemporary panelled leather boards retained. It measures approx. 36cm x 23.3cm x 5cm. The boards are naturally a bit surface worn and scratched, and the corners and edges are a little bumped and nicked in places. The corners have some neat repair. The binding is firm. Internally, the joints have been reinforced. There is a previous owner's* armorial bookplate pasted to the inside front board, with his name, and date in ink to the top corner of the front free endpaper. The endpapers to the front and rear are a little grubby and browned. The title page is a bit creased and browned/grubby to the margins, and has a previous owner's ink name stamped to the top corner. There is a repaired tear to one of the dedication leaves. There is pale thin staining & wrinkling to bottom edge of first 12 or so leaves and the wrinkling continues to a few further leaves. Folding map has pale browning/foxing, and is a hint worn to folds. There is some very occasional pale marginal grubbiness/dustiness and wrinkling. Occasional small mark and crease, else in good, clean and firm condition.
Uncoloured engraved folding map by John Harris and fourteen (complete) uncoloured engraved plates, index bound at rear.
Discussing the general Geography, Topography, Natural History, Fossils, Shells, Botany, Birds, and Prehistory of the county.
"His observations on geology and palaeontology are of interest. …..The botanical section of Morton’s Natural History received significant attention from his contemporaries and is notable for its attempt to arrange the flora of Northamptonshire systematically. The arrangement is principally that of John Ray’s Synopsis methodica stirpium Britannicarum (1690)."
