1737 Embroidery Cross Stitch Sampler Needlework Antique. 280 Years Old
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:6812537 |
It was either professionally framed by and/or purchased through a Pittsburgh store, Joseph Horne Co., probably sometime in the mid 1900s. (There is also an empty envelope glued to the back paper on the frame from "The Ruskin, Shenley Farms, Pittsburgh PA." So perhaps the framer was Joseph Horne and the seller was The Ruskin.) The frame with glass is in good conditio...n. The cross stitch itself is in as-framed condition.
This cross stitch sampler does not have the name of the person who did the work stitched into it. As noted it is dated (Anno) 1737. I suspect this is likely of British origin, with a possibility that the work was done during colonial times in America.
I have provided full view photos of the front and back and also detailed photos of different areas of the cross stitch work so you can assess the quality and condition of the piece. (I apologize for the glare off the glass in some photos. The fabric color as seen in the full view photo is a fairly accurate view. On some of the close up photos my digital camera auto-corrected the background to a lighter color than it is.) The individual series of photos show the piece as you might see a tic-tac-toe board . . . starting at the top left corner and working down, then the middle section working down, then the right section working down. I wanted to be sure you could assess the quality of the stitching throughout the piece.
The framed size is 15" wide by 13-1/4" high.
(Note - there are some the tears on the paper on the back, which is its as-found condition.)
I package well, and this will be shipped Priority Mail. Shipping, with insurance, is included in the purchase price.
