Be Christe my pattern and my guideHis image may I bearO may I tread his sacre...d stepsAnd his bright glories shareJane Birbeck. Bewaldeth. Aged 13 In the year of our Lord 1831
The lower section of the linen is stitched on the left with a sailing ship which has the initials IB to each side of its rigging, whilst the right side is stitched with a floral urn plus bird. The whole piece is then surrounded by a meandering floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with a light crease running across the centre. The colours of the wool are good with some small areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Jane first stitched it.Measures 10 1/2" x 15 1/4"
I AM ALSO SELLING A SAMPLER WHICH I ACQUIRED AT THE SAME TIME AS JANE'S. IT IS BY MARY BIRBECK, COMPLETED IN 1836 WHEN SHE WAS 12 YEARS OF AGE. THERE IS A STRONG SIMILARITY BETWEEN THE TWO PIECES SO IT IS LIKELY THAT THE GIRLS WERE SISTERS.
