Item History & Price
My associate in France is an expat American historian of European DecorativeArts & museum curator, with 45 years of advanced experience. Sincerely, ET Burdett Dear friends &clients: We have more Fine Arts & Antiques than wecan begin to keep up with, as to eBay – at least 4, 000 period pieces. Groupphotos will give you a slight idea of the depth of mycollections, and Elly's inventory - keep watching this page. R. Josef The antiques trade is rife withperpetuated errors, and moving to France 26 years ago meant that I had tounlearn more than a few. Schiffer’s TheBrass Book (pub. 1978) isnotoriously unreliable – it covers a number of tobacco boxes, but completelyskips Germany – the only relevant comment is that the form is late 17thcentury. This was just acquired at auction in rural Central France; theauctioneer thought that it might be from Iserlorn (NW Germany, near the Dutchborder), but I don’t have any reference books to clarify this. The condition isnot perfect – it has the normal surface wear, some roughness to the hinges (see photos # 8 through 11), and the hinge pin is not original. The iconography of the engraving hasmore to do with the 17th century than the 18th – I havethe pleasure of owning two books of Emblems from the early 17thcentury, and am very familiar with the character of decoration from the period. One major oddity is the inlaying of brass on the copper lid and base –the sides are brass. The underside of the box is more worn, and I think thatpart of the inscription is gone, but with scrutiny, the top is legible. The sceneon the lid might relate to a building trade – the bottom scene is clearlyecclesiastical, albeit unusual. I haven’t had the time to transcribe andtranslate the engraving, but it should not be too difficult – I’ve hadsubstantial success with other early Dutch or German metalwork inscriptions. The moldings are architectural; the rounded “coffin” form and the “flame” or “dog-tooth”engraving on the ends are all earlier than later details.Elly is currently at my house in France – we are on the roadbuying nearly every day, and with immediate and substantial success – do keepan eye on this page.We are independently listed with theNew England AppraisersAssociation, for France orthe UK.Condition: Intact, but as as-seen, and as described above. There is a small horizontal split the center of the top (see photos # 1 &9), and to one end (see photo # 10).
