This very early Ward Lock & Co illustrated travel guide is one of the original editions of the "red" guides published between 1901 and 1910. These were the first of those with the famous "coat of arms" design on the cover and with the 1/- net price at the top of the spine, leading to the guides becoming known as the "shilling" guides. They are full of contemporary photographs, advertisements and fold-out maps. These guides are increasingly becoming collectors' ite...ms. I have a large collection of these early guides, but am needing to sell a number because of lack of space to store them.This particular guide dates from 1903/04. 2nd edition revised. Details as follows :Area covered : Sidmouth, including Seaton, Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Dawlish, Teignmouth, Exeter and surrounding parts of South-East Devon.Contents : 160 pages of text. 3 fold-out maps (one of which is missing) and a sketch plan. Over 40 illustrations. 90 pages of wonderful old contemporary advertisements.Overall condition : Very good.Maps : One map is missing. The others are present. Very little wear, but the first map has been stuck back in with a couple of strips of paper tape. No other markings or damage.Covers : Very good. Normal wear. Faint superficial grubbiness - see scan. No markings or damage.Spine : Very good. Normal wear. No markings or damage.Binding : Very good. faint crack inside front cover.Pages : Very good. Very little wear. Slight discolouration at edges. No markings or damage.
