Original Description:
Mid/late 19th century sampler by Jane Underhill aged 9 - c.1869. Though undated, I am selling an unfinished sampler also worked by Jane which she finished in 1869 at the British Free School in Lisbon, Portugal. This finished sampler by Jane seems to have been completed slightly earlier as the stitching though fine, is not quite as fine as on the other piece. Worked in a lustrous thread on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout, the moreso wh...en one considers Jane was just nine years old when she completed it. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers, Roman numerals and border patterns with the words - Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path - to finish. The middle section of the gauze is stitched at the centre with a bible which has the couplet - Holy Bible, book divine. Precious treasure sure thou art mine - below and the following biblical quotations worked to its left and right

The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central fruit basket with a green bird standing on either side of its contents with a flora urn, crown and floral motif to the left and an anchor, flower and flower basket to the right. Jane's details are stitched beneath - Jane Underhill worked this sampler at the B.F.School Aged 9 - then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering floral border.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some patches of faint staining, and the colours of the thread are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Jane first stitched it.Measures 17 3/4" x 14 1/2"
