Mid/late 19th century sampler by Mary Crawford - 1874. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the gauze are stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns finishing with two rows of family initials. The lower section of the gauze is stitched at the centre with a very sweet two storey house with two trees to its left and right, with a bird perched on the top of the outermo...st one. Mary's name and the date of 1874 are stitched beneath underlined with a double zigzag border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with patches of staining from where certain shades of the wool have bled. Several shades of the wool have mellowed from their original vibrancy but the effect is still a pleasing one. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how bright the colours would have looked when Mary first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are visible tack marks and some slight damage around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.Measures 12 1/2" x 16 1/4" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
