RARE Decorated Early 18th Century Hearth Kettle Coal Pusher Nice example of early ironwork dating from the early to mid 18th century, circa 1720-1750. An almost identical example to this can be found on page 185 of George Nuemann's Early American Antique Country Furnishings.A pusher such as this would have been kept at the foot of an open hearth fireplace, used to arrange various kettles as well as arranging hot embers.  If you've ever been to some reinactment villages such as colonial Williams...burg, you can see these items in place, used to arrange the hot coals under meat cooking broilers. Note the great overall construction and early blacksmithing work.View each of the images for enlargements and you'll see the great signs of period blacksmithing work, original condition and age appropriate pitting from exposure to a hearth. Note there is decoration placed into this example on the circular tab handle area of linear decorations in an upspringing tree like pattern (though faint on photography can be seen more vividly in person). 

The piece has two circular areas formed into the bottom areas across from one another by the blacksmith.  This are directly across from on another and likely formed in to allow a long reaching iron instrument of more commonly a fireplace "poker" to adjust the piece from a distance. Measures approximately 5 1/2" in diameter, stands 2 1/2" tall.
 Again, some rust and pitting from age, still solid overall condition with a charming look. Would look wonderful at the foot of a period hearth with period metalware. 

These period coal/pot/kettle pushers are getting harder and harder to find; we haven't offered one in years and this only recently coming out of a long standing ironware collection.
