Description: From: Topographia Germaniae (1642–1654), a multi-volume series of books created by engraver Matthaus Merian the elder and writer Martin Zeiler. Engravers include Wenceslaus Hollar, Caspar Merian, and Matthaus Merian Jr. Topographia Germaniae was first published by Merian the elder in Frankfurt am Main from 1642 to 1654 in 16 vo...lumes. Later more volumes appeared and the work was continued by Matthaus Merian the younger and Caspar Merian after Merian's death in 1650. In total the work contained 92 maps and 1486 plates with 2142 images, being one of the largest geographic works of it's time. Related to this are the other works published by the Merian's: 'Theatrum Europaeum.' (published 1633-1738) and the world description 'Archontologia cosmica'.
Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Caspar Merian' after an anonymous artist. Caspar Merian (1627-1686) was one of the most important German topographical engravers and publishers in the Baroque period. He was the son and pupil of his father Matthaeus Merian the elder (1593-1650) and his first wife Maria Magdalena - de Bry. His brother was Matthaeus the younger. The artist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) was his half sister from his fathers second wife Johanna Sibylla Catharina.Subject: Antique print, titled: 'Groningen.' - This print shows panoramic view of the city of Groningen, The Netherlands.
Condition: Very good, given age. Original middle folds, as issued. Missing left top, reinforced using contemporary paper backed with acid free archival tape. Margin cropped close to the image edge, reinforced using contemporary paper, for framing purposes. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
Size (in cm): The overall size is ca. 37.8 x 15.9 cm. The image size is ca. 36.2 x 14.1 cm.
Size (in inch): The overall size is ca. 14.9 x 6.3 inch. The image size is ca. 14.3 x 5.6 inch.
