From the Dust Jacket: Mosby and His Men – the “hellcats on horseback” who so effectively harassed Grant and Sheridan in 1864 and 1865 – this is their story, fully told for the first time. Up and down the Valley of Virginia they rode, penetrating the Federal lines at will – a swift and invisible scourge to outpost and supply trains. Anticipating the tactics of modern commandos, Mosby enlisted old men and young, farmers and foreign adventurers – anybody who could ride and fight. With grim humor, he spanked a Yankee general in his bed, and carried him off as a prize of war. Planting a cannon ball in the vitals of a locomotive, he leaned a payroll train of $200, 000 in Federal currency. The impetuous Custer hanged six of Mosby’s men – Mosby hanged six of Custer’s man – the they called a truce on hanging.
Wearing a plumed hat and flowing cape, Mosby was a Virginia gentleman to the last. Calm and almost sleepy-looking in private life, he was quick on the draw and a master of the Rebel Yell. Though implacable to his enemies, he was always kind to women and children. “Over Virginia and eventually over the nation…spread his name. It was a synonym in the South for brave deeds and daring escapades – a byword in the North for fear and hatred and chagrin…. A bounty, never claimed, was placed on his head. As he dashed across hilltops with flaming coat…the veil of mystery about him expanded until it reached the bedtime talk of children and the great rife, swelling him by youthful reverence into a godly figure that dashed out of the wind.”
After the war, Mosby settled down to his law practice, disturbed only by political squabbles and an occasional duel. He was once arrested by the Yankees for refusing to cut the buttons off his uniform. Yet he made peace with General Grant and became a welcome visitor to the White House. His disinterested support of Grant brought him enemies at home and little advantage for himself, since he refused to accept any federal office. In this, Mosby was ahead of this time, sincerely desiring national unity. After Grant’s term was out, Mosby served faithfully for seven years as U.S. Consul at Hong Kong, where he was presented with a loving cup by Chinese merchants in recognitions of his good faith and fair dealing.
As an old man, Mosby was revered not only by the gray-haired Partisans who had followed him in their youth, but by his former enemies as well. On a lecture tour through the North he was enthusiastically acclaimed – but the old man was lonely. His wife dead, his children scattered, he sadly observed, “I wish that life’s descending shadows have fallen upon me in the midst of friends and the scenes I loved best.” He died in Washington at the age of eighty-three and was buried in Warrenton, Virginia – deeply mourned by the state he had loved and served so well.
