***A Very Rare Book***
I am delighted to offer for auction an original First Edition / First Printing of the exceptionally scarce Anthony Burgess title ' The Worm And The Ring'. Published in 1961 this book caused a scandal at the time so was soon withdrawn and pulped by the publisher. Surviving exa...mples are few and far between with the odd ex-library one popping up now and again, this one is a very nice example, it is NOT ex lib and it is signed with interesting provenance.
About this Item: The Worm And The Ring, Heinemann, 1961. Hardcover. Very Good. Dust Jacket Very Good. A First UK printing published by Heinemann in 1961. The BOOK is in Very Good + Condition. The binding is tight and the book presents very well indeed with bright boards showing virtually no signs of age or wear. Clean, square with nice sharp corners and bright gilt to the spine. Internally the book is again very good with clean pages throughout. A few light age spots else super with nice firm hinges and margins. The book belonged to and has been SIGNED by Daphne Fielding who was a famous author and the sixth marquess of Bath. A quick wiki search will give more info and the signature is verified . Dated 1961 with the name of the villa included at the bottom which i presume she used to own or was staying at. The DUST WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good condition. It has mild bumping to the corners with a couple of small splits and a little wear to the spine tip. Nice vibrant strong colours with a little sun tone to the spine only. It has not been clipped correctly showing 16s net. The condition of the wrapper is far better than usually encountered designed by John Rowland. A very SCARCE early key BURGESS title with an interesting history: The novel was withdrawn from circulation following a libel action by Gwendoline Burstin, the secretary of Banbury Grammar School where Burgess taught in the early fifties. Several characters were recognisable as figures from the school, but only Miss Burstin, later Lady Mayoress of Banbury, objected. Heinemann agreed to 'amend all unsold copies of the book' (The Times, October 25, 1962) but actually pulped them. Of the few copies that surface many are ex-library and this is one of those books that is very difficult to find full stop. To have the association of it belonging to Daphne Fielding along with the scandal it caused when published this would be a very special book for any collection and it is likely to be a title not many people own.
I can only find 3 of these books available for sale worldwide between £950 and £2250 the former in lesser condition. None have the association of this one.
**This is one of a number of scarce First Editions i have listed so please have a browse through my other items**
