Wow.I would love to know the history behind this wonderful old tobacco/snuff box. Wow, when this box was made, Sydney, Australia had only been a British Colony for around 20 years! Showing some dents and scratches (who wouldn't if they were 212 years old!) which could be beaten out by a competent jeweller/restorer if desired (will leave that up to the buyer) but I feel that would be a travesty as this is in original antique condition.I also have not cleaned this piece. I will leave th...at up to the buyer to clean to their taste. 200+ years beautiful patina can be so quickly removed in 1 minute but why? I even love the way a corner has been repaired, a super old repair (please see photo 4) which shows this case has been very loved and cherished. Gee I'd love to know how that original damage had happened? A splinter damage during a sea battle??? Who knows but the owner would have paid a fair bit of money to get this repaired at the time, probably more than what the box was originally worth??There is a hand engraved light letter M on one side and a faint hand engraved initials, so faint but I think there is another letter M?Anyway.It is 75mm (7.5cm) long by 45mm (4.5cm) long by 18mm (1.8cm) tall. Slightly curved to fit neatly into a pocket.The hinge works well yet the box shuts a little lop sided, again could be "tweeked" but I am selling as is. Total weight of 64.51 grams. Please take a look at the hallmarks. Crisp and clear, I haven't seen a hallmark that old in a piece I have ever owned.Hallmarked for Birmingham (anchor) 1806/1807. Lion Rampant for sterling and the duty mark of the head of George III.
