It was used to help feed babies, invalids, or the ill. The pap boat was filled with an easily digestible substance. Originally a gruel like substance of bread, flour, and water was used. Later milk, butter, and sugar was added depending on the families wealth. You will usually find pap boats in silver being made in England. ...American pap boats are quite scarce. This is a rare example of an American Coin silver pap boat. The bottom of the piece is marked with an impressed "John C. Farr". John C. Farr was a silversmith in Philadelphia from 1823-1858. From 1823-1836 he worked as John C. Farr. From 1837-1853 he worked as John C. Farr & Co. The mark on this pap boat is from his early period and is marked "John C. Farr". This dates to the 1820s to early 1830s. Circa 1825. Nice form with a central waist. An applied silver band with a pattern is on the inner rim. The simple strap handle terminating in a shell is quite elegant.   This dates pre Civil war era. Antique. Almost 200 years old. Very good condition for age.
