Original Description:
Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Ann Say aged 10 - 1831. This sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with the letters of the alphabet and the numbers 1 through to 15 arranged in groups of three in a triangular shape, each trio separated by a line of stitching. There is a central heart beneath flanked by a crown and four dogs then underlined with a narrow diamond border. The middle section of t...he linen contains the following verse which has a row of bird and flower motifs to the right side and is underlined with a meandering border
If life was a thing that money could buyThe rich they would live but the poor they must dieBut God in his goodness hath ordered it so That the rich and the poor both to judgement must go
The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit basket with a tulip, rosebush, heart, diamond, and flower to the left and a tree, floral motif, heart and diamonds to the right. Ann's details and the date of March the 17 1831 are stitched beneath then the top and bottom edges are stitched with a deep floral borderThe linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with a light crease running across the middle. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There are a few old repairs to the linen and also to some of the stitch work of the word POOR.   The sampler is contained within a mid 19th century bird's eye maple frame with gilt slip. Both are in good condition with good colour to the frame and the odd scratch and scuff mark commensurate with its age. There is also a small area of veneer loss to the lower left corner. I also want to point out that it appears that the border patterns running down the sides of the sampler have been obscured by the gilt slip. This may well have been intentional to cover up damage or it could simply be that the owner wanted it that way. Measures 9 3/4" x  12 1/2" (sight size) and 14 3/4" x 17 1/4" including the frame.
PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
