Jesus per...mit they gracious name to standAs the first efforts of a female handAnd as her fingers on the bolting moveDo thou engage her heart to seek thy love
The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central flower with a bird perched on it, a flower basket and cluster of flowers to his left and right. Frances' name and the year of 1812 are stitched above him with a floral urn to either side, whilst her age is stitched to each side of the flower the bird is standing on. The whole piece is then surrounded by an arcaded floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker around the edges with general grubbiness. The colours of the silks are good with some areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Frances first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are scattered incongruous pieces of stitch work dotted over the linen which are almost certainly the work of a different hand. There are also several areas of damage to both the edges and field of the linen, some having resulted in stitch loss. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable.Measures 13 1/4" x 14 1/2"
