Alone to virtue happiness is giv'nOn earth self satisfi'd and crown'd in Heav'n
The lower section of the linen is stitched with a floral border with Elizabeth's details and the date of Anno Domini 1817, the whole piece is then surrounded by a narrow floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with the aforementioned painted area. There is a small area of damage above the word AND in the last line of the verse, another on the top edge and another down the upper right side edge. The colours of the silks are good with some bleeding to areas of the stitch work. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colour would have looked when Elizabeth first stitched it. Measures 8 3/4" x 10 1/4"
