SMALL EARLY 19TH CENTURY MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY ELIZABETH GREGSON AGE 10 1817

Small early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Elizabeth Gregson aged 10 - 1817. I will begin by drawing your attention to the verse area of the sampler. Looking at the back, the stitch work of the verse has bled at some point of time and stained the linen. For some reason, someone has decided to paint this area in an effort to camouflage the staining! As such, the linen is hard and has a solid appearance. But despite the paint job, this sampler is still completely charming wi...th fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central flower basket which has a carnation basket on a tall pillar to its left and a carnation basket with a bird on top to its right. There is a small floral motif by the pillar whilst the central flower basket has a trio of butterflies around it. This section of stitch work is then underlined with a triangulated border. The middle section of the linen is stitched with the following rhyming couplet which has a tree, flower and birds on either side

The lower section of the linen is stitched with a floral border with Elizabeth's details and the date of Anno Domini 1817, the whole piece is then surrounded by a narrow floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with the aforementioned painted area. There is a small area of damage above the word AND in the last line of the verse, another on the top edge and another down the upper right side edge. The colours of the silks are good with some bleeding to areas of the stitch work. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colour would have looked when Elizabeth first stitched it. Measures 8 3/4" x 10 1/4"
