MID/LATE 18TH CENTURY " EXALT THE NEEDLE " VERSE SAMPLER BY SARAH LEAPER - 1771

Mid/late 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Sarah Leaper - 1771. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with two rows of alphabet letters and numbers with a central flower motif which has a fruit basket above and below, each flanked by a crown. The fruit baskets then have a carnation basket at their side with a bird perched on top, a crown to the side of each bird's head. The carnation baskets then hav...e a floral motif to their side with a crown above them. This section of stitch work is then underlined with a deep scalloped bargello stitch border The middle section of the linen is stitched with the following charming verse which is contained by a triangulated border above and below

The lower section of the linen is stitched with an exquisite central crown worked in metal thread and gold silk which has Sarah's name and the date of February 26th MDCCLXXI to its left and right, There is a diamond border above and below Sarah's details then the whole piece is surrounded by a deep carnation border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker around the edges. There are also several small areas of damage to the linen plus the linen between the two border patterns above Sarah's seems to have disappeared. Through the damage one is able to see that the sampler has been placed onto a clean linen backing cloth at some point of time. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The frame is contained within its seemingly original slim hand carved frame which has been painted to simulate burr walnut. The frame is in good condition with the odd scratch, chip and scuff mark commensurate with its age. Measures 9" x 14 1/2" (sight size) and 11" x 16 1/2" including the frame.
