EARLY 19TH CENTURY VERSE & ALPHABET SAMPLER BY ELEANOR ALLAN MACE AGED 9 - 1834
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:48305324 |
Lord permit thy gracious name to standIts the first efforts of an infa...nt handAnd while her fingers o'er the canvas mo(ve)Engage her tender heart to seek thy love
The verse has a dog and floral motif to the left side, a flower basket and tulip urn to the right and is then underlined with a floral border. Eleanor's details and the date of 1834 run across the bottom edge of the linen with a star motif to their left, then the whole piece is surrounded by a zigzag border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker in the upper left quadrant and also down the middle. There are also several small areas of damage, some having resulted in a small amount of stitch loss. One is able to see through these that the sampler has been stitched around the edges onto a clean backing cloth. The last photo shows how the backing cloth has been taped around card. As such I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the thread appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years.Measures 13 1/4" across x 12 3/4"
