The lower section of the gauze is stitched with the following verse
They are sleeping in Jesus - exalted their pleasureWhere the weary repose from the toil of the dayThey have enter'd on Christ's inexhaustible treasureTheir sorrow and troubles hath vanished awayThey are sleeping in Jesus we would not detain themFrom joys which already have burst on their sightFor to sojourn in flesh would assuredly pain themHaving passed from darkness to marvellous light
The words - In the midst of life we are in death - are stitched beneath the verse then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering floral border. The gauze has overall brown discolouration consistent with its age, and the colours of the wool are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are visible tack marks around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.Measures 14 1/4" x 16 1/2"
