MID 19TH CENTURY MEMORIAL SAMPLER BY SARAH HANNAH ALSOP - AGED 11 - 1857

Mid 19th century memorial sampler by Sarah Hannah Alsop aged 11 - 1857. Worked in a lustrous thread on gauze, Sarah has lovingly stitched this stunning piece of needlework as a poignant tribute to Mary Ann Alsop, possibly Sarah's grandmother, and Hannah Heathcote. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central flower basket with a crown above flanked by foliate swags. Mary Ann's details are stitched to the left of the central basket, with Hannah's to the right, then each has... the following biblical quotation beneath
In memory of Mary Ann AlsopWho died Nov'r 28th 1855 aged 64 years~~~~~~Also of Hannah HeathcoteWho died May 6th A.D.1855 aged 31~~~~~~Blessed are the dead that die in the LordThey rest from their labours and their works do follow them
The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central mausoleum with a funereal urn on top and surrounded by trees. There is a floral swag above held aloft by two winged angels. Sarah's details and the date of 1857 are stitched beneath then the whole piece is surrounded by a deep floral border.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, rather brown and paler around the edges from where the sampler has been over a stretcher at some point of time. There are also patches of water staining on the right half of the gauze. The colours of the thread are good The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Sarah first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are small visible tack marks and some slight damage around the edges of the gauze from where it has been tacked over a stretcher.Measures 15" x 13"
