Sarah's details and the date of 1857 are stitched beneath then the whole piece is surrounded by a deep floral border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, rather brown and paler around the edges from where the sampler has been over a stretcher at some point of time. There are also patches of water staining on the right half of the gauze. The colours of the thread are good The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Sarah first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are small visible tack marks and some slight damage around the edges of the gauze from where it has been tacked over a stretcher.Measures 15" x 13"
