Mary Ann's details are stitched in the lower section of the linen with the date of May 18 to finish - this could either relate to the day of the month or the first two digits of the year Mary Ann finished her sampler. There is a floral spray on each side of Mary Ann's details then the whole piece is surrounded by a rose border with a rose in each of the upper corners. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker around the edges, and the colours of the silks are good with some slight bleeding to areas of the black stitch work. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Mary Ann first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is an area of damage approximately two inches long running across the word HOW in the first line of the verse, a few small areas of damage in the rose border and more extensive damage around the edges. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage to the field would be less noticeable.Measures 13 1/2" across x 13 1/2"
