The lower section of the linen is stitched at the centre with Charlotte's details and the date of March 1840 which have a flower basket and star motif on each side. There is a row of seven crowns beneath, each with a letter above to identify their rank. There is a floral motif to each side of the crowns with a bird and two more crowns between them. The whole piece is then surrounded by a rose border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age and the colours of the silks are good with some slightly bleeding to areas of the stitch work. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Charlotte first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is damage to the edges of the linen and a few small areas to the field. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable. There are also small visible tack marks around the edges of the linen from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.Measures 13 1/4" x 15 3/4"
