MID 19TH CENTURY VERSE & MOTIF SAMPLER BY HANNAH HEWETSON AGED 13 - C. 1850

Mid 19th century sampler by Hannah Hewetson aged 13. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1850 or slightly earlier. Worked in wool on a fine gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with two rows of alphabet letters and numbers with Hannah's details beneath, whilst the middle section contains the following verse worked in black silk
In the glad morn of blooming you...thThe various threads I drewAnd pleased beheld the finished pieceRise glowing to the viewThus when bright youth shall charm no moreAnd age hath chilled my bloodMay I review my life and sayBehold my works were good
The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central tree which has a basket to its left and right, a floral motif and tree to the side of each, then the whole piece is surrounded by a zigzag border.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with the odd small stain and the colours the thread are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Hannah first stitched it.Measures 12 1/4" x 12 1/4"
