Mid/late 19th century sampler by Catherine Terry aged 9. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1870 or slightly later. Worked in wool on even weave gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, whilst the lower section is stitched at the centre with a colourful bird standing amongst flowers with a floral motif and ...parrot on a perch to his left and right. There is a central-ish crown above the bird with a deer and rose basket on either side, whilst Catherine's details are stitched in blue below the bird. There is a meandering border above Catherine's details then the whole piece is surrounded by a narrow green chequered border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with general grubbiness and some patches of staining. The colours of the wool are good with some shades having mellowed more than others over the years. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Catherine first stitched it. This photograph also shows some remnants of old paper around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been glued down at some point of time.Measures 11 1/4" x 12 1/2"
