Mid 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Catherine Tait - 1850. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with an arcaded floral border with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns beneath. The lower section of the linen is stitched with four rows of sets of family initials, some worked in black which usually indicated those family members were deceased. There is a charming little cottage beneat...h with a tree on either side then Catherine's name and the date of 1850 are stitched across the bottom edge. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly grubby with a few scattered faint stains. The colours of the wool are good with some small areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Catherine first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are two small areas of restoration to the lawn area in front of the cottage and also some of the stitch work in the red outline of the house and the rectangle containing Catherine's name etc.Measures 7 1/2" x 16 1/4" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
