Press-molded porcelain with painted decoration and gildingApproximately 10.25 (w) x 7.75 (h)"
This plate was used to serve shucked oysters. Its overall shape playfully suggests serving oysters on a clam shell. There are 6 "oyster" impressions for placing the oysters, and 1 shaped like a scallop shell (perhaps for a sauce).
On... the plate's surface, a bed of seaweed is molded in relief, along with various shells, a lobster claw, a frog, and a crab. This "clam bake" scene is painted in brown, blue, pink, and yellow with overall pink shading and gilding in places.
Marks on the back:1. "Tiffany & Co New York"2. U.P.W. logo with eagle3. "Pat. Jan. 4 -- 1881"
This rare plate was made for Tiffany & Co. by the important American manufacturer, Union Porcelain Works, located in Greenpoint, New York.
