Preserve me Lord amidst the crowdFrom every thought that's vain and proudAnd raise my wand'ring mind to seeHow good it is to trust in theeElizabeth Brown's work Aged 12 Years 1879
The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a strip of grass which has a majestic stag lying upon it, an oak tree and smaller deer to his right side. The grass has a large purple rose and two small floral motifs to the left side and a flower basket to the right. The purple rose has a floral spray and fruit basket above whilst the tree and smaller deer have a crown, rose, tree and fruit basket above. The whole piece is then surrounded by a meandering floral border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with some areas of faint staining and the odd small mark. The colours of the thread are very good with some stitch loss to the words. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Elizabeth first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is a small area of damage to the top left corner of the gauze and rusty tack marks around the edges from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.Measures 17 1/2" across x 17 1/4"
