Nice CDV of Pvt. John J. Madole in his Oneida Cavalry uniform sporting two revolvers and cap box on his belt along with his cavalry sword. He has shoulder scales, a rain protected forage cap, and a nice pair of cavalry gauntlets. He is ready to take on the war! Nicely stenciled on the back with his ...name and unit. The CDV is addressed to a Cornelius J. Livenstone whom I believe is Cornelius Livingston a resident in John Madole's hometown of Marathon, NY, as can be seen in the attached 1860 census record.
John enlists in the Oneida cavalry unit September 4, 1861, and is discharged for illness o/a May 10, 1862. Interestingly his service record mentions his losing a Navy Colt revolver (likely one of the very ones he has tucked in his belt)! John then enlists with 10th New York Cavalry on September 30, 1862, but that service is short lived as he becomes ill in Frederick, MD, on June 28, 1863, thereby missing that unit's action in Gettysburg. After that he bounces around several hospitals and ends up doing detached service in the QuarterMaster's Department in Washington, DC, since February 1864, then returns to a series of hospitals that summer until his discharge February 25, 1865.
It would have been nice had he seen some additional action through his long service, but how he managed to bounce around hospitals for two years is testimony to his fortitude I gather.
The CDV is on the lighter side, but a nice pose nevertheless.
Also included are his military service for both units. There was no pension filed.
