2 RARE C1850 OLD PARIS PORCELAIN PINK CABINET PLATES, LE ROSEY, RIHOUET, BIRDS
Item History & Price
In the competitive world of Parisian porcelain making in the late 18th and 19th centuries, manufacturers and decorating studios often included their address on porcelain wares to inform buyers where to buy more. 11 rue de la Paix was one of the Paris addresses of the decorator Le... Rosey, who moved to rue de la Paix in 1830 and acquired the Rihouet decorating studio - also on rue de la Paix - sometime around 1853.
Both studios produced extraordinarily beautiful works in an era of superb quality in French porcelain making. The Le Rosey studio's clientele included members of the French royal family, other European royalty and the cream of French society. The studio won many awards at Paris exhibitions. Rihouet also had an impressive clientele. On the reverse of some of his other works is the inscription "RIHOUET - Fournisseur du Roi - 7 rue de la Paix". Rihouet provided fine porcelain wares to the King and to the Duc d'Orleans, beginning in 1824.
Age: Because Le Rosey acquired Rihouet around 1853 and these plates have the names of both studios, 1853 is likely the earliest these plates could have been produced, making them perhaps 166 years old.
Design: Each plate features two finely painted birds within a deep pink band encircling a pure white center. The intricate design highlights the fine quality of the porcelain, which is thin and translucent.
Condition and size: Both 8 3/4 inch plates are in very good condition for their age. There are no nicks, cracks, stains, repairs, scratches or major wear to the design. There is minor wear to the gold edges and verges on both, and significant wear to the verge on one of the plates. There is a tiny indentation near the verge on one plate, created in the manufacturing process. One plate's pink band is slightly darker, and one has a tiny chip on the edge of the underside and a small area of discoloration around the chip. That's shown in the photo with the penny.
Purchased at the estate sale of an elderly antiques dealer, these plates are a beautiful early example of porcelain artistry. They would make a gorgeous display on their own or as part of any collection of beautiful porcelain.
Please check all the photos very carefully - they are an important part of the description.
