She is a beautiful cabinet sized 16 inch young lady with inserted long gold mohair hair in the orig...inal set and brown eyes (a rare and lovely combination) and although unmarked was made by Herbert John Meech. She has a delicate, pretty shade of the lightest rose petal pink to her wax and her original paint including those distinctive full lips that Meech favoured in some particular models.
She reminds me of a French fashion doll in some ways. She is elevated by her beautiful costume which features nineteenth century silk floss and gold metallic embroidered netting decorated with iridescent green sequins of jewel beetle wings or elytra. Her antique Victorian organza skirt has tiny gold sequins at the waist, the original mother of pearl button to close and a hem decorated with this same exotic and rare green-edged beetle-wing trim. Examples of this interesting beetle-wing embroidery, which was made in India and exported to Britain during the Victorian period, may be seen in the Victoria and Albert museum.
Beneath her skirt she has a matching organza underslip and original cotton pantaloons and half slip with very pretty and elaborate broderie Anglais trim.
The finishing details are not overlooked. She is proud and elegant in an antique gold-tone matching neckchain and bracelet, delightful antique floral circlet, amber coloured finely knit socks and tiny ivory paper shoes with silver tone buckles.
She has no breaks, cracks, missing parts or balding. Her condition is excellent and her cloth body and stringing is original. I have photographed what I can access - part of the costume is stitched on (the bodice) and part is removable (the outer skirt, pantaloons and petticoat which both have button closure). The socks and shoes are a very snug fit and I don't want to damage them, but I have removed them in the recent past and can assure bidders that there are no missing parts and all is in good order.
I think she is an absolute treasure and worthy of being part of any fine antique doll collection.
Please note that the little hatbox, stationery case and Colebrook teapot are not included in the listing and are for display purposes only.
For the purposes of insurance for loss and tracking, this doll will need to be shipped by Global Priority for international bidders at a cost of 68gbp. Mainland UK shipping will be 18gbp.
