I’m finding it quite hard to list this beautiful 20 inch antique English poured wax doll because she is so endearing with that face that NEARLY smiles and pretty colouring. She is a classic early Montanari with the glass eyes of Staffordshire blue, narrow waist and mid rose pink wax. What a gorgeous combination of dark hair and skin colour!
She is wearing a pretty antique cotton dropped-necked doll dre...ss with the beautiful double sleeve effect and white work embroidery on the yoke (one or two ancient repairs, happily hidden amongst the embroidery).
At her tiny waist she has a Victorian black velvet belt which has a really pretty antique sapphire paste centrepiece and a bow of the fabulous blue ribbon which matches the vibrant blue silk hatband on her hand-sewn Victorian straw dolls hat.
The hat has a turned up brim and is still lined with old silk inside which protects her inserted dark silky mohair from the roughness of the straw.
Under the dress she has a set of pretty cotton hand-stitched underthings consisting of an early antique cotton doll corset (fitted, with a V shaped waistline at the front), pantaloons with gathered frills to the legs and a half slip with a lovely lace trimmed flounce at the hem (both antique). She also wears original pattern knit wax doll ankle socks.
Her condition is very good with no breaks or missing parts. Not until close scrutiny and a decent light source would you notice any historical repair but there is repair to both shoulder plate and the tops of the legs. It is so well executed, however, that I hardly ever remember it - it feels like part of her and her history to the extent that one barely notices it.
She is a doll I do not hesitate in thinking will bring such joy to the winning bidder. I find she has a gentle sweetness and happiness which warms wherever she happens to be, along with a face which makes you want to have another look every time you pass her.
