Mid 19th century sampler initialled AC/AM etc. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1845 or slightly earlier. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the gauze are stitched in red and green with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, finishing with a row of sets of family initials followed by a further row worked in black which often indicated... those family members were deceased. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a charming cottage which has a tree and bird to each side, then the whole piece is surrounded by a floral border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age and the colours of the wool are good with some small areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked it was first stitched. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is damage to both the top corners of the gauze and lesser damage to the bottom right corner.Measures 11" x 16 1/4" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
