EARLY 19TH CENTURY MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY MATILDA PARKER AGED 10 - 1829

Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Matilda Parker aged 10 - 1829. This sampler is just stunning with very fine quality stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Matilda was just ten years old when she completed it. The upper and middle sections of the linen are stitched at the centre with an exquisite floral arbour, its side pillars entwined with flowers have a tulip urn on top with a flower basket plus birds to the side of each. The arched roof of the arbour..., also entwined with flowers, has a central fruit basket above flanked by floral motifs, whilst each pillar has a bird on a blossom branch, a tree and flower basket on either side. The interior of the arbour is stitched with the following three verses with Matilda's details and the date of May 20th 1829 to finish This needle work of mine will tellThat when a child I learned wellAnd by my Mother I was taughtNot to spend my time in naught~~~~~~~Tell me ye knowing and discerning fewWhere I may find a friend both firm and trueWho dares stand by me when in deep distressAnd then his love and friendship most express~~~~~~~The holy feast of Easter was injoin'dTo bring Christ's resurrection to our mindRise then from sin as he did from the graveThat by his merits he your soul may save
The lower section of the linen is stitched with a deep zigzag border, a flower in each of its peaks. There is a central building beneath with chequered paving to the front and a trio of birds on its roof, those on either side of the topmost central bird with a crest on their heads. The building has a fruit tree and flower basket to its left and right then the whole piece is surrounded by a deep floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with general faint, mottled staining and light puckering. There is some damage to the corners and edges of the linen and several small areas of conservation stitch work to the field of the linen with more extensive work around the edges. But due to the sampler having been placed on a new backing cloth when the work was carried out, the areas on the field of the linen are less noticeable than those on the edges and corners. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is bleeding to some of the green stitch work. The sampler is contained within a mid/late 20th century burr maple frame with gilt detailing. The frame is in good condition with the odd scratch and scuff mark commensurate with its age and an area of damage on the upper right outer side as can be seen in the penultimate photograph. Measures 18" x 16 3/4" (sight size) and 20" x 19" including the frame.
