In the early days ofthe sewing machine Canadian Raymond models were
imported into the UK by JamesGalloway Weir, a British ...politician with an eye
to business.
He and the RaymondCompany fell out in the early 1870s and Raymond
machines were then sold byvarious companies throughout the UK.
This simple instructionleaflet came with machines imported by P Waterston
of Edinburgh.
It’s a simple four-pagebooklet measuring 4 inches/100mm x 5 ½ inches/140mm, giving instructions onsimple sewing, needle changing and general
sewing hints
Let us not agonize toomuch about the poor quality - instead let us give thanks
that a paper objectover 150 years old has survived at all.
The edges of the pagesare a little dog-eared and there is a tear to halfway
up the centre fold.
However, the good newsis that all the text is complete and totally legible.
Interestingly, it wascalled Raymond’s 55 shilling machine – Weir had used
the same title. (BG1B)
