Small mid/late 19th century sampler by F.Warden aged 11 - 18 74. Worked in wool on gauze, this little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The gauze is stitched with an idyllic scene of two young women, one seated, within a peaceful rural setting. There are buildings and a church to the right of the women who have a stretch of water behind them with a mountainous backdrop in the distance. F.Warden's details and the date of 1874 are stitched in green beneath....The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker around the edges with some faint, speckled staining to the field. The colours of the wool are good with a small area of stitch loss directly above the D in F.Warden's surname. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are remnants of old glue and visible tack marks around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.Measures 10 1/2" x 9 1/4" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
